“If you can see it, you can eat it”
Written by myundu on April 8, 2011 – 1:30 pm -A group of us met to talk about garden landscaping, and what plants were the least attention-intensive especially for the time-challenged and, for me, the space-challenged.
We discussed the different varieties of ornamentals and how to fit them around each other so they wouldn’t crowd each other out. We compared plant heights and wondered if raising some areas of the garden would make for a more visually arresting arrangement.
One of us was commenting that it would be nice to have some herbs among the plants when the host’s husband walked in and joined our discussion. He said he was planning his own “if you can see it, you can eat it” garden in their backyard, right beside their kitchen patio.
He said that every single plant in his garden would be edible yet the garden would rival our ornamentals in beauty. He mentioned bamboo for the shoots, taro (elephant ear) for the tubers and stalks, different kinds of pepper and basil, ginger and some dwarf apple, orange and coconut trees, three different colors of tomatoes, cabbages, cucumber and lettuce.
He had us when he said, “This is real, healthy fast food – you see it, you pick it, you eat it!”
We haven’t totally let go of pure ornamentals but are going around the nurseries to include more edible plants in our garden landscape plans.

Lighting Choices For Backyard
Written by myundu on November 19, 2010 – 5:38 am -An important feature for garden decor is the lighting. Today, lighting is more important than ever. Thus, it is practical to ask: What kind of lighting do you like? There are several options available for you on the market. Let us take a look at some of them:
1. Solar lighting- This is very economical since you do not have to change the bulb. It works with rechargeable batteries that are powered by the sun during the day to get some energy and it works as light in the night.
2. Tiki torches- These are like flashlights made of decorative rod, fuel tank and wick. The most conventional type is made of bamboo, but there are a number of recent models on the market. Tiki torches can be small enough to be on the patio table or as tall to be on the top of your tree.
3. The best of both worlds- You can also buy electric tiki torches powered by solar energy. They are certainly safer than those that have an open flame and you can leave them longer too.

Creating Your Own Chinese Garden
Written by myundu on November 2, 2010 – 7:18 pm -For ancient Chinese legends, having a Chinese Garden or “Chinese scholar’s garden” gives one a silent contemplation and a natural harbor from the city life. The design of China’s most famous garden is the willow pattern in light blue and white porcelain that is used to be very popular in the West. In fact, this probably what introduced the concept to places outside China.
In today’s hectic world, the idea is creating your own garden, which serves as a tranquil place of spiritual refuge. This may be more important than ever before. Therefore, you may like the idea of a separate Chinese garden in your backyard.
It’s easy to build a pond and a pavilion. To create your own small mountain, in fact, with the right planning, you can have an artificial hill to add in the atmosphere even turning the pit in a pond or stream. The pavilion should be strategically located near the water source. Add a small bridge on the river, which will contribute to peaceful mood as well.

Growing Your Own Herbs For The Kitchen
Written by myundu on October 31, 2010 – 6:59 pm -It would be nice to grow your own fresh herbs right in your own kitchen. Nothing is more delicious and healthy than to use fresh herbs in the kitchen and there is nothing better than rewarding yourself with something that you can use. Aside from the fact that home grown herbs can save a significant amount of money for food, there are a lot of other advantages of growing herbs in your kitchen
Deciding on kind of herbs to grow would usually depend on what you would be using the most. Some herbs I prefer to grow indoors are thyme, oregano, sage, parsley and chives. Mint is another herb that is good to cultivate inside. However, make sure that the herbs are in their own container.
If you select seeds, you must read the instructions on the package. Not all plants are planted in the same depth or require the same amount of water. Each plant should be treated as an individual. Above all, have fun with your garden!

How To Make A Fun And Pretty Patio
Written by myundu on September 26, 2010 – 7:08 am -When it comes to decorating a patio, you should remember that this space is open at all times. This means that you should incorporate and place items and furnishings that are water and heat resistant. Some resistant materials are teak, hardwood, plastic, slate, and natural stone. These materials won’t damage easily and they are perfect for your patio.
Patios should be a sociable place. You should place a center table with several seats around it so family, friends and guests can gather around it and talk. You can also spend some quiet time along in your patio by sitting on a few wicker chairs with a sunshade.
Additionally, you can decorate your patio with great exotic potted plants. If you are looking for a different plant décor, try to have some elegant ferns or are cacti on your patio.
Generally, decorating your patio depends on what you want. You can always make this a special place for you and your family. You do not need much effort to produce a great-looking patio. You just have to be creative to make this a pleasant place.

Backyard Décor Tips
Written by myundu on September 23, 2010 – 2:10 am -It is an additional plus if you have your own backyard or garden at home. There are absolutely a lot of uses for backyards. You can grow vegetables from there or simply tend some beautiful flower beds. But whatever you decide to do, it is suggested that you base your decision on your family needs.
If you have kids at home, you can make your backyard into a place for children. It would also be great to make this place an all-in-one place for your family’s entertainment and recreational activities. Below are few great tips to consider:
1. Aside from fancy garden furniture, you can add garden toys like swings, slides and seesaws.
2. You can also teach your children to plant some vegetables and watch their produce grow.
3. For garden furniture and accessories, you can have an outdoor rug that functions as both decoration and rug for your children’s feet.
