Fun With Different Painting Techniques
Written by mystyle on July 25, 2010 – 11:48 pm -If you enjoy decorating your home, then most likely you have already tried doing the painting, too. Interestingly, there are several ways on how you can paint your walls, and while you think they might be boring or don’t need to learn about them, then, think again. The truth is learning about the different painting techniques can be as fun as decorating your little girl’s bedroom or decorating your sunroom.
One particular style of painting is called sponge painting where you simply put a base coating of solid color paint to cover a surface. Once dried, you can go on and use glaze on top and use a slightly dampened sponge to dab the surface using different angles. What’s nice about this is you can get your children to participate with you since this type can be done by any age group. In effect you are not just decorating your home, but also bonding with your kids. Apart from that, you can also paint your living rooms’ or bedrooms’ walls using rag rolling and stippling techniques which are very easy to learn and do.
With these techniques, painting walls or ceilings by yourself will no longer be as boring as you think it is!

Making Your Teen Room Look Larger
Written by mystyle on July 25, 2010 – 9:26 pm -Who doesn’t want to have a large room, if not in space, at least, in looks, right? Here are some tips on how to decorate a small room for teens.
When I was in my teens, I was one of the many who wished to have a large room, exactly the way I see on TV. But that just didn’t work, so my mom was creative enough to strategize the room decors to emphasize the space instead of all my clutter.
But times change, and so does style. Before, mom would simply take out the excess belongings in the room and re-arrange the placement of the bed, dresser, study table, or the chair. Now, decorating a teen’s room to achieve bigger look can take more than just weeding out and adding in the right stuff.
One way to get that bigger look of your teen’s room is to change the wall paints. That is of course, if the room has darker shades of paints, chances are, the room will look cramp and bland. Using lighter shades, say white or pale blue, gives a wider view of the space. If you want to get a rustic look without crowding the space, use white paint as dominant color, and give light brown accent to it.
As for the furniture to use, bed is already a given so there isn’t a lot you need to do about it. Except that, consider the size of the room and decide whether putting in a single-sized or double-sized bed is the fittest choice. What about the rest of the furniture? Better to have a wall mounted closet, because somehow this eliminates excess spaces. Just that, you can’t move it anywhere you like.
In all these given suggestions, the whole point is to stick to the basics. Bed, study table and a good chair, beddings, curtains, wall décor, dress cabinet, are usually the most important furniture pieces. With those and the right choice of wall paint, your teen’s room will not only look bigger but also clean and welcoming.

How To Create A Beach-Themed Kitchen
Written by mystyle on July 25, 2010 – 8:36 pm -If you have been to a beach and stayed in a beach cottage you will notice the big difference in the kitchen compared to your residential kitchen. A beach kitchen is minimalist in look but very functional in use. They give that fresh and crisp look and very distinguished features that you would just love to incorporate to your own home.
So, how exactly do you achieve that beach-themed kitchen? First of all, notice how the walls look in a beach-themed kitchen. Solid white, aren’t they? That’s because white gives this breezy feeling which is a great component of a relaxing beach. Hence, if you are to start painting the walls in your kitchen to achieve the beach look, go for solid white shade, not off white or anything. White can give the look of your kitchen area a good balance. You can still whip in another shade but make sure not to dominate the white one.
Another way to get the beach-themed kitchen is to infuse blue, and it’s not only about blue paints. You can get ocean blue rugs, whether small ones or one large piece, and place it in your kitchen for a more defined look. And of course, don’t forget to accessorize the walls. Hang in a straw hat as wall décor, or put in a vase filled with sand or pebbles or shells in one corner of your counter top.
Be creative, but never forget the basics of what a nice beach looks like because this will be your inspiration to bring the theme to your own home.

Western Décor In Your Home
Written by mystyle on July 20, 2010 – 7:08 am -Once my husband and I were dining at a local restaurant located in a mall, I was hugely impressed with the western theme décor of the place. And I thought that introducing western décor in the house is yet another theme that will spruce up a relaxing household ambiance that’s out of the ordinary.
To begin with, when you decide to use western décor in your home, it helps to know the right accessories such as art walls, and the right color paints to use. Setting the tone by using honey, beige, navy, gray, and dark green are some of the best color choices for your walls or rugs. Likewise, leather, denim, and suede are by far the most popular type of fabric that will go along well with the theme.
The good thing about setting up a western theme is that the accessories are easily found even in thrift shops, such as pottery you can use as living room décor, large baskets filled with pinecones, area rugs, etc. The key is to know the elements of a western décor so you’d know exactly what pieces to pick up to enhance your home.

The 50s Themed Home Made Easy
Written by mystyle on July 20, 2010 – 4:01 am -Itching to give your house a blast from the past and transform it into a vintage showroom of sorts? All you have to do is pick a decade and do a little research on the furniture, designs and colors that were highly popular during that time.
For a fabulous fifties style look to your home, you don’t have to look very far back to get an idea of what’s in and what’s out in interior design. The classy 50s home was usually described as ‘moderne’, with lots of geometric shapes and sleek Spartan furniture. Instead of using dark wood for cabinets and chairs, a homemaker of the 50s chose blond wood like washed ash or birch.
True to the sleek and shiny style of the era, bright metals like chrome and aluminium were favorite materials for furniture. You can mix and match bold shades like hot pink with calmer, cooler tones like cream to create a different feel to every room. As a finishing touch, look for accessories that highlight family and rural life all the more, such as paintings of country scenes as well as farm animals. These will definitely complete the look and give you a more consistently-themed home.

Home Decoration Ideas For Aging In Place
Written by mystyle on July 14, 2010 – 6:39 pm -Making your home as beautiful as possible is just one side of a home decoration project. For other people, the more important aspect to home improvement is to make the entire house more livable and functional.
Older members of the family will surely benefit from decoration ideas that help them through the process of ‘aging in place.’ Instead of sending the senior members of your family to an assisted living facility, you can instead make adjustments to your home decor and furniture that will give them maximum mobility and functionality.
For example, you can replace ceramic tile flooring with something a little more textured so that the older members of your family won’t be prone to slipping and sliding on the shiny floor. In the bathroom, you can install handlebars to help them sit on the toilet or get up from the bathtub.
If you’re looking for something that will cost a lot less, you can try using area rugs to cover your floors. Look for a non-slip material that will provide excellent traction and grip.
